Due to a shortage of mental health crisis services across the U.S., law enforcement officers typically serve as first responders in mental illness crisis situations despite receiving minimal-to-no training in mental health crisis intervention.
Facilitated by Board-Certified Police Safety Psychologist Dr. Robin Kroll, the Crisis Intervention Training program educates and prepares police officers to respond effectively and appropriately to individuals in crisis.
Program topic areas include:
- Recognizing the signs and symptoms of mental illness
- Understanding how mental illness can alter behavior and perception
- Reducing injury to officers, family members and individuals in crisis
- De-escalation techniques when interacting with individuals in crisis
- Connecting individuals with mental illness to appropriate treatment and resources
