Neurological Screenings

Due to the nature of law enforcement work, a pre-employment psychological evaluation helps identify those who may not adjust successfully in a law enforcement career. A thorough pre-employment psychological evaluation addresses the areas of:

Nervous system disorders and mental health disorders may have similar symptoms, and some behavioral symptoms can be signs of a nervous system disorder. Damage to the nervous system can cause problems in daily functioning. Specialized imaging methods can visualize changes in brain activity or the levels of particular brain chemicals.

A neurological screening assesses motor and sensory skills, hearing and speech, vision, coordination, and balance. It also tests mental status, mood, and behavior.

During the exam, different functions of the nervous system are tested, including:

A complete neurological exam may be done during a routine physical examination, following any type of trauma, and/or if the individual has any of the following complaints: condition, cognitive abilities, and behavior that are evaluated in pre-employment psychological screening are:

Loss of balance or coordination
Injury to the head, neck, or back
